Make teaching math the cat’s meow. This project-based learning activity for fifth grade is purr-fect for reviewing math skills.  Real-world-based place value and whole number operations activities engage students as they care for cats and customers at the Paw-sitive Vibes Only Cat Café.
 
This cuddly, furry PBL includes five activities related to visiting a a cat cafe.  Students will be eager to practice essential standards-based math skills as they help manage the cafe, order food and supplies, take inventory, and so much more.
 
Each of the five activities requires students to complete mathematical tasks and answer questions based on cat café-themed situations. Students will need to rely on their knowledge of place value, multiplication, division, powers of ten, comparing decimals, expressions, and more to solve math problems and interpret data. But they’ll be having so much fun kitten around, running a successful business, and tending to their feline friends, that they won’t realize they are practicing valuable math skills.
 
This PBL activity is super easy to prep and implement. All you have to do is print and present. So you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your new whiskered friends!

How to use this resource:

There are a variety of ways to use this resource in the classroom:
  • Use as a whole group activity at the end of your whole number operations and place value units and complete the entire PBL as a review.
  • Use one activity a day to begin reviewing near the end of your whole number operations and place value units.
  • Place activities in student math centers
  • Assign to students to complete individually 
  • Allow students to work together or in a small group
  • When using the colored version, print just a few copies and laminate or slide into page protectors. Students can use an expo marker to complete the activities and you’ll have the activity for years.
  • Use during guided-math groups to provide extra support to students.
  • This resource is best used after you have taught addition and subtraction

That’s up to you! PBL activities are great for collaboration, however, you can choose to allow students to work on this individually as well.

Is this a hands-on activity?

Students will use the data provided on the resource pages to solve problems and tasks. We've also provided pages for students to show their solutions. The preview has some great pictures to give you a good idea of what the resource includes.

How can I use the colored version in class without wasting ink?

The colored version is great if your students are working in pairs or small groups. Print and laminate the colored pages and have students use expo markers to record their answers. When they are done, they can erase their marks and you can reuse the pages over and over again.

How long will this PBL take my students?

We estimate this activity will take about 60 minutes. Time may vary depending on class factors and whether or not students are working in groups.

Why are there two versions of the activities?

With the exception of the letter-writing and crossword activities, each task has a version more appropriate for grades 2-3 and another that is more suitable for grades 4-5.
