Geography: 5 U.S. Regions Social Studies Unit for 2nd and 3rd Grade

Help students make sense of our big country with this engaging and comprehensive unit on the five regions of the United States!

Through interactive PowerPoint lessons, guided booklet activities, hands-on research, and a creative travel-style project, students will explore how land, weather, resources, and jobs shape how people live across the U.S.

Students won’t just memorize region names. They’ll build a deep understanding of why regions exist and how geography connects to everyday life.

Teachers often struggle to:

• Clearly explain how and why the United States is grouped into distinct regions
• Teach students to accurately locate and label the five U.S. regions on a map
• Help students understand the physical features, climate, and resources unique to each region
• Show how geography shapes the way people work, live, and interact within each region
• Guide students in comparing regions by identifying similarities and differences across key characteristics

The unit includes interactive PowerPoints, enrichment activities, task cards, a research project, and an assessment. Students also complete a social studies booklet to track their learning each day.

By the end of this unit, students will think like young geographers — making connections between land, weather, resources, and how people live and work in different parts of the country. They’ll gain a strong foundation for future geography and social studies learning.
