Help your students understand how the economy works in a way that actually makes sense to them!
Bring economics to life in your classroom with this engaging 10-day Supply and Demand social studies unit for 2nd and 3rd grade. Students will explore how people make choices with limited resources while learning important economic concepts such as needs and wants, goods and services, producers and consumers, scarcity, supply, demand, and price.
Through interactive lessons, students discover how the choices people make as consumers can affect prices and availability. They will analyze real-world scenarios, compare supply and demand situations, and apply their learning through a highly engaging classroom market simulation where they become buyers and sellers.
Teachers often struggle to:
- Make supply and demand relevant to students’ everyday lives
- Explain concepts like scarcity, pricing, and decision-making clearly
- Show how consumer behavior affects prices and availability
- Provide hands-on, engaging learning experiences
- Differentiate for multiple grade levels
- Connect economic vocabulary to real-world examples
- Help students apply concepts in meaningful ways
The unit includes interactive PowerPoints, enrichment activities, task cards, a two-day classroom market simulation activity where students take on the roles of consumers and producers, a supply & demand enrichment game, and an assessment. Students also complete a social studies booklet to track their learning each day.
By the end of this unit, students will build real-world financial literacy and economics understanding by showing them how supply and demand works in everyday life—from sold-out products to price changes in stores.
